screening gestational diabetes

There are some screening test for gestational diabetes.
The first test is called the oral glucose tolerance test. During the test the pregnant woman will consume a drink containing 50g of glucose. After one hour her blood glucose level is tested and if it is equal to or greater then 130 to 140 mg/dl then further testing is needed.

The next test to determine if a woman has gestational diabetes is the 3 hour, 100g oral glucose tolerance test. This test actually lasts about three days. For the three days before the test the woman eats an unrestricted diet eating at a minimum of 150g of carbohydrates each day. The night before the test she fasts and in the morning drinks a 100g oral glucose solution. Her plasma glucose is tested at four different intervals with blood glucose levels.

Hey, I want to ask if you develop Gestational Diabetes and are put on insulin injections, what is your risk of diabetes and what if you are taking insulin during pregnancy? Is it permanent? I mean, after you've given birth?

There is high chance of developing diabetes later after having gestational diabetes now. But not related to taking insulin during pregnancy. If it's suggested that injections are to be taken then it has to be. It'll help keep mom and baby healthy.

It actually eases the burden of your pancreas. If not during pregnancy the condition may worsen in future. The opposite should be true. ;)

A woman who develops Gestational diabetes is almost 98 % certain to develop diabetes within the next 10 years. That will be typically type 2; it can be controlled with pills, rather than insulin.

Gestational diabetics are given insulin as it's a natural hormone, with no known side affects to the fetus, where as pills haven't been tested for it.

I was detected with pre diabetes at the age of 23 and was on fixed schedule of diet exercise and insulin when I was pregnant. At the age of 42, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, and I am now 51 years with insulin dependent.

About 70 % of women who develops gestational diabetes will go on to have type 2 diabetes within the first five years after delivery. Your risk is highest if any of the following apply to you:

If you’re obese
